Why We Believe Small Groups Are Important

Community can serve as a means of transformation, both for individuals and for groups. Jesus calls us into deep relationship with one another, and we are called into relationship with God. We believe that community is so essential to the Christian life that Christianity is actually impossible outside of a life in community.

With this in mind, small groups are for our church a means of establishing this communion with God and others, for the purpose of more fully becoming the church we are called to be. In other words, small groups become a means of establishing the community to which we are called as Christians.

Consider joining a Small Group!

Sign-ups will open up for Tri-1 in early September and runs through the beginning of Advent.Tri-2 begins mid-January and runs through mid-March. Tri-3 runs mid-April through mid-June. Sign-ups will be open two weeks before each Trimester begins. Sign-up to be a part of the same group you’ve been attending, or try something new! All current small group members are asked to sign-up again, in order for us to get an accurate count of numbers/slots available. It’s also a great opportunity for you to reassess/restate your commitment to your group.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Acts 2:42-47

Goal For Small Group Structure

Our hope is that a new structure for small groups will help to breathe new life into our current small group system. We want to recognize how God has worked in the lives of individuals through small groups in the past, and also want to find ways to provide the space for greater small group involvement, thereby allowing for community to become a pillar and pulse of our congregation. This, we believe, will allow for more transformation, both individually and corporately.

Groups run on a trimester system, with each trimester spanning 10 weeks. These will roughly follow the church calendar. Before each trimester or “Tri”, everyone will have the opportunity to sign-up for a group. If you like the group you have been attending, sign-up for it again! If you’re ready for a change, for whatever reason, sign-up for a different one! Need to take a trimester off, because of work, or a new baby, etc.? No worries! We’ll see you back at the beginning of the next Tri! There’s a lot of flexibility around here with this new model.

It is essential that you sign-up, even if you have been in your group for years. By signing-up, you are recommitting yourself to the group, and giving our pastoral staff a way to know who is actively a part of each group. If you do not sign-up, your space may be filled with another new member. We will always give priority to people who have been in a group in the past. But, do sign-up!! Both online and paper sign-ups will be available and widely broadcasted. Sign-ups are open for 2 weeks. once small groups begin, sign-ups close until the beginning of the next trimester, in order to foster growth, intimacy and continuity within the group during that trimester.

We really encourage you to take the next step of signing up for a small group when they open up! We know it is a risk to step out into new relationships and we know that it is a time commitment, but it is in the concrete and tangible relationships of our lives that we grow in Christ and learn to love and receive love.

Tri 1: September 11-November 13, 2016.

Tri 2: January 15-March 19, 2017.

Tri 3: April 17-June 18, 2017.

Leaders of small groups must be committed members of All Saints, and will be recruited and vetted by Julie and Thomas. They will be asked to commit to the leadership position for one to two years. Aside from leading their group, the leadership commitment includes weekly check-ins with Julie after each meeting, as well as attending trainings three times a year: in August, January, and June.

Our hope is that each group will also have an apprentice leader who will learn from and work with the group leader. At the end of one to two years, the apprentice will be ready to form his or her own group.

Content

Study materials, content and meeting structure is open to each group’s needs and desires. It is possible that during some trimesters, a particular study, topic, or book will be suggested, while other trimesters would offer more flexibility to the interests or desires of the group. However, each group will be asked to spend the first few weeks of every trimester going through a Life-Mapping Training curriculum, which will allow each member to share their story in a guided, productive way.
